Just posted an article on habrahabr about using x86 for high end PLC devices.
Mostly very introductory stuff, but it includes a rough calculation how brute force / rough processing speed of modern x86 processors, can beet predictability of ASIC PLCs in hard real time performance, regardless of jitter.
