Last time we went to Mt. Pirongia we could not make it to the summit: it was too hot. Now it's winter so it's not an issue any more. This time we've made it to one of it's lowest summits (730m). Some photos under cut...

Few kilometers before car park we've passed a guard sheep. (It's guarding an entrance to the farm that is close to one that has a fence made of toothbrushes.)

Two pigeons in the bush (may be they are not pigeons, but look similar. One thing that is different is they can mimic other birds sounds. Update: this is not pigeons but Tui bird One of most intelligent New Zealand birds (Along with Kiwi and Kea Parrot).

Those thin trunks are not liana climbing a tree, it's new roots growing down from trunk of a broken large tree.

Another tree had managed to grow on a big solid rock, it had tangled it with roots (there is no cracks in solid granit, just some leaves. It was able to sustain my body's weight (though it would have been a cruel to such a brave tree if test hadn't succeeded)

Finally, a view of Waikato valley from the summit. Usually if lights on the photo are so intense it is clearly a photographer's fault (especially if I am the photographer). However in this case it is very similar to what we had seen: It was almost unbearable to look to plains in the north (mid-day sun is was so bright in spites of clouds). I thought this only happens when there is a clear white snow, but it works with green wet grass too.

btw, biggest news in New Zealand for last couple of weeks is resignation of top immigration official. It was uncovered that she was involved in unlawfully granting residency to her husbands relatives and then later it appeared that she does not have PhD degree from LSE as she claimed in the CV.
I think that besides poor Mrs Thompson the reputation of LSE and alike also could had suffered: if high rank state official could work for 15 years and nobody noticed(except now when all her background is being re-checked) than is there any difference between a person who has a degree and one who claims so?
