I recon I have to write how I managed to get that cross compile done in the end..

Thanks max630, debootstrap was the fastest. I've tweaked couple of libraries versions and it worked, took about one hour total. The virtual machine didn't boot because graphics driver for my embedded target image was crashing under KVM, and using generic i386 build did not make sense.
