The latest post on WorseThenFailure had reminded me another story on the end-of-epoch-bug.
I was once told by an architect of a system that was being developed in late 70s, like Unix, and is still almost as wide-spread as Unix but far less known to the public, that the Epoch on that system will overflow on 2104. I don't think I can tell the system name in the blog. But as far as I know, the system still runs a lot of critical systems that supports the integrity of the global economy, and it already has at least 2 layers of virtualization. Those are needed mostly not to touch the ancient but very efficient and large code base, and run that on modern h/w. It is very likely that several additional layers of virtualization will be there by 2104, and the system will be still deployed somewhere. What a surprise! In 2038, there will be plenty of people who knows what's up, but in 2104, even I will certainly not able to explain what happened to The System when time arrives, let alone my friend, The System Architect.
