Jacob and experimental physics

Jacob just discovered an effect that I was not aware about: if you hit a plastic milk bottle with your fingernail when it is very dark,

luminescence is visible to an eye if it is adjusted to total darkness. This amuses Jacob a lot. Not sure why it happens (anybody can suggest?), but not a bad discovery for a 6 months old boy.
