Several days ago I went to a customer in Aachen. Normally if a customer is located more than 2 hours by car/train away, I'd rather fly. This time I could not fly - my passport is still at the US consulate and sometimes (rarely) they check passports on boarding even domestic flights in MUC.

It should take 5 hours 30 minutes to get to Aachen from Munich on train. Flying is not much faster - 30 minutes to get to the airport, 1 hour for check-in/control/boarding, 1.5 hours flying to Cologne, then 1.5 hours driving to Aachen. 4+ hours total.
Unfortunately, 5.5 hours on a train works only in a perfect world. In practice, trains are late, connections are missed so it took me 7.5 hours.

So I did not have any time to see the city.

Another reason why I had to take the train is that I was not sure if security in the airport would let me take an eval board I was carrying to the plane. I have a colleague who had recently left our customer facing team and went to a developer position. He gave me a great gift: an ATX case with a power supply and a handle.

It was raining so I had to make something quasi-waterproof.
Very handy!
