I remember that in Civilization 1, there was a bug/feature/Easter Egg - a key combination that allowed a player to switch sides. It was used mainly for cheating and some times for hot seat multiplayer. I though that that could be a great feature for a turn based strategy game, if implemented properly.

Just found it in Europa Universalis 3. It appears that when loading a saved game, I can select any nation to play, not just the one I was playing. This makes the gameplay even deeper, and allows a lot of what-if historic scenarios to be explored from different angles: What if England sells Gascony and Normandy to Burgundy instead of losing them to France after the Hundred Years War? The AI controlling France fails to recover if this happens, but is there a decent way out for a human player? The game can model a lot of events like that in different parts of the world... Very scary - a game featuring more addictive single player mode than WoW or WoT :(
