Application Engineer
Jan. 29th, 2013 08:57 pmAdvanced computer users know that programmer and IT/system administrator are very distinct professions. Some even know that most common professions in IT industry are programmers, testers and project managers. Insiders know about different kinds of s/w engineers (web, enterprise, mobile, etc), SCM, QA vs testers, team leads vs managers, architects, etc.
Nearly everyone forget about my profession - Application Engineer. I wonder why? Application engineer is not a very common type of s/w engineer, but if you grep monster.com or intel.com/jobs or whatever you'll find plenty of job ads.
I am doing this since 2006 and quite happy. Most s/w engineers visit other companies only to attend interviews. I do this as a part of my job. One of most interesting things is comparing different work environments, teams, s/w architectures. It usually makes sense to compare within same country/same industry. But it is just fun to compare e.g. office spaces of different types of customers (like finance vs industrial vs consumer electronics ). The downside is I am not allowed to share these findings :)
