Most software engineers in Russia and I guess anywhere often run into the same problem:
Friends, relatives and just strangers tend to ask to fix their computers, troubleshoot, explain which model to buy, help buying PC and installing everything. I know few IT professionals who have a T-shirt "I won't fix your computer", most others want to wear such T-shirt even at work ;) Actually, it is more fun to troubleshoot friend's a PC for me than for my friend who did it for living...
Sometimes, I am successful in explaining that fixing PCs is not my profession as a software engineer and thus I am not an expert, but just an amateur. In this case, unfortunately, it is even harder to explain the different sorts of programming to non-technical people who grasp the difference between IT and software engineering.
"Aha, so you are not an IT technician but rather a software engineer! Then go create a software for me, I pay. Oh, you say this simple piece of code is 1 man week for an average engineer, I knew this stuff is simple! Than I pay you 200$. Or even 300$."
I am telecom software engineer. I've never created a user interface and have no intention to try yet. ITU-T standards, ASN.1 notation and bits in the wires is the stuff that I love to mess with.
I will happily recommend my friends - LAMP professionals and so I do. However, there are still people who think that I'm just showing off and want more money to help install CMS, create a simple database and stuff ;0
