Set up a meeting with a doctor, professor X. Paid ~80 euro for private consultation, he suggested treatment A. (The patient came from Russia, so he does not have German insurance and has to pay privately)
Set up a meeting with another doctor, professor Y. Paid ~80 euro for private consultation, he suggested treatment B. (Which is mutually exclusive with treatment A.)
Set up a meeting with a third doctor, professor Z from Klinikum Grosshadern. He is the most prominent in the field so we had to wait for couple of weeks. The patient started treatment A (we tossed a coin) and went back to Russia meanwhile. So the goal of the meeting was to show professor a set of data and treatment plans, and get his suggestion on which treatment is correct, if any, or if he needs any additional data to decide. His secretary agreed with the agenda, and suggested that the consultation will cost around 90 euros.
Meeting was set up for 8.30. Came at 8.20, and his secretary told: "You should go to another department to sign some document". Klinikum Grosshadern is a big building, so it took 10 minutes.
Then at 8.30 there was a dialog with a secretary:
- You are OK to meet the doctor now, but before you must give me 500 euros in cash.
- Why 500, the consultation costs less than 100?
- This is our regulation, we need a deposit because during a consultation a patient might need urgent medical assistance. So you should pay the deposit, because you do not have a medical insurance.
- The patient will not need immediate assistance because he is now in Russia. I have just the documents for the doctor to look at. And I have insurance, so whatever happens to me when I talk with the doctor is covered.
- Still it is our rule and you must give me 500 euros in cash before I let you talk to the doctor.
- Will you give me a receipt?
- No, I will place your money on my table and when you are done I will give you back 410 euros and a receipt for 90. I do not have change so please give me 500 euros so that the last 100 euros is split to 10 and 90.
- Unfortunately I only have 100 in cash with me. This is what I was told to have when setting up the meeting.
- You were speaking with my substitute, she is not aware about this 500 euros rule. I think it is apparent for anybody that when going to a private doctor, you must be able to afford it. You may go to an ATM and get cash now. However if you do, you will be late for appointment, so let's set up another one, I have a time slot in 3 weeks
I am certain that this lady told the doctor that the appointment was cancelled because the patient refused to pay.
