Programmer's unions demand 40 hours work week

Recently I was chatting with a guy who codes trading mathematical models for a big bank in London. He confirmed they have 60+ hours work week.

I still don't understand two things:
1. How can one stay alert and do meaningful work when coding 12 hours in a row without any rest for months
and
2. how can one have any life when spending 12 hours in the office, 1 hour (lucky one!) for getting there and back, 2 hours for consuming nutrition (I can't call this eating), 8 hours sleeping.
