08.02.2009, my birthday present - ticket on NZ99
It was few days ago, 8th of February, my birthday when we boarded NZ99 flight to Tokyo.
The post is long so goes under
We flew over Northland and Cape Reinga. There were very few clouds so it was possible to make few pictures. Here is the 90miles beach at the northermost part of North island.

Next spot below was a part of France, New Caledonia. They are using Euros not New Zealand Dollars
like their neighbor Cook Islands.

Then some nameless coral atoll on equator had appeared.

I was not able to find it on the google maps. I guess it's
only accessible by yacht, and it does not seem to have any drinkable water.
The plane was half-empty (that is very unusual for trans-pacific flights), so the crew was relaxed and smiling like happy people, not because
they were supposed to be smiling as Air New Zealand customer facing employees.
We landed on time, quickly got our shore passes and went to Narita Express (there was another Russian fellow who needed a shore pass, all other ppl on the plane were Kiwis so they just went directly to immigration).
Here is a business idea for JR (Japan Rail). Narita Express is equipped with a local cellular standard BTS. It should be possible to install a GSM BTS with a gateway to local network and some billing facility (that would actually be most difficult thing to implement as there is a good deal of non-technical negotiations is involved). Now it's possible with COTS h/w!
The only thing I am not sure is RF spectrum issues. But provided the transceiver is weak enough this should not be a problem. I realize that those ppl who really need it do rent local handsets. But for others it would be very handy and any would be willing to pay an extra to text or call family.
We were surprised to see our Japanese friends we met in New Zealand waiting for us at the hotel. They had shown us Shinjuku, explained why everyone is wearing masks, and shown us good but not too expensive traditional restaurant on the top floor of some skyscraper. The view from 52nd floor was magnificent.

Cooks too :)

I was not able to pay our part of the bill, our hosts were very persistent about paying for us. I guess we'll send them something nice and useful from Germany. Thank a lot Sachio and Yuske!
Before boarding, we've found a great samples of origami. These small wonders are all made of paper:
